Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Husband’s Family Treated Me Like A Walking ATM and Left Me Alone in the Resort Lobby While They Went Upstairs to Celebrate an Anniversary Trip I Had Paid $35,000 For—Then He Texted, “Stop Being So Dramatic, It Was Just a Joke,” So Instead of Joining Them for Dinner, I Walked Back to the Front Desk and Asked One Question About the Card Guaranteeing Their Rooms

Part 2 of 3

Another was $8,500.

Another was $4,200.

All initiated through Eric’s access.

I took screenshots.

Then I emailed Rebecca Collins, the divorce attorney a colleague had recommended two years earlier when another woman at my firm was separating from her husband.

My message was short.

I need a consultation as soon as possible.

At 11:42 p.m., Eric texted:

“Mom is crying because you ruined her anniversary night.”

At 11:47:

“Ashley thinks you owe everyone an apology tomorrow.”

At midnight:

“You’re proving exactly why my family has trouble with you.”

I didn’t answer.

At 7:55 the next morning, I was downstairs drinking coffee near the lobby windows.

At exactly eight, Daniel was behind the front desk.

At 8:17, I heard Linda before I saw her.

“There has obviously been some mistake.”

She marched toward the desk in a white resort robe, Ashley beside her.

Eric came several steps behind them.

Robert and Kevin followed.

Daniel remained polite.

“There’s no mistake, ma’am. The cardholder withdrew authorization for the other rooms and incidentals.”

Ashley spotted me.

Her face changed.

“Megan.”

Eric turned.

He crossed the lobby quickly.

“You canceled the rooms?!”

Several people looked over.

I put down my coffee.

“No, Eric. I removed my credit card.”

“Same thing!”

“Not really.”

Linda stepped closer.

“Do you have any idea how humiliating this is?”

I looked at her.

For a second, neither of us said anything.

Then I glanced at my phone.

The photograph from the night before was still there.

Six glasses.

Six smiling faces.

The whole family together at last.

“Yes,” I said. “I think I understand humiliation pretty well.”

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Mr. Carter, the current outstanding balance for the four rooms and associated charges is $14,280. We’ll need a valid payment method if you’d like to continue the reservations.”

Robert’s face went blank.

Kevin stared at Ashley.

Linda turned toward Eric.

“Fourteen thousand?”

Eric lowered his voice.

“Megan, put the card back.”

“No.”

“We can discuss this upstairs.”

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re embarrassing my family over money.”

I opened my bag and removed the folder I had printed at the hotel business center that morning.

A few pages of bank transactions sat inside.

I placed them on the table between us.

“Then maybe you can explain why my money paid for Ashley’s rental car.”

Ashley stopped moving.

I turned another page.

“Or your father’s golf membership.”

Robert looked at Eric.

Another page.

“Or Linda’s clinic bills.”

Linda’s face drained.

Eric reached toward the folder.

I put my hand over it.

“Don’t.”

For the first time since we arrived in Miami, nobody was laughing.

And for the first time in five years, Eric’s family was standing in front of a bill that had my name removed from it.

The Folder Eric Didn’t Want Anyone to See

Eric reached for the folder again.

This time, Daniel stepped out from behind the front desk.

“Sir, please don’t touch her belongings.”

Eric pulled his hand back.

“This is between my wife and me.”

“Then stop reaching for my things,” I said.

Linda folded her arms over her robe.

“Megan, whatever Eric spent, he spent on family.”

I looked at her.

“With my money.”

“You’re married.”

“That doesn’t make my personal account a family checking account.”

Ashley finally spoke.

“Eric told us you knew about the car.”

I slid the rental charge toward her.

“I didn’t.”

She looked at her brother.

Eric rubbed his forehead.

“Can we stop doing this in the lobby?”

“You didn’t mind leaving me in this lobby last night.”

That shut him up.

Robert picked up the golf statement.

“You said this was your anniversary gift.”

Eric said nothing.

Linda looked at the clinic charge.

“And you told me this came from your bonus.”

Again, nothing.

That was when I understood something important.

Eric hadn’t merely convinced me that helping his family was normal.

He had convinced his family that the money came from him.

For years, I had been paying for his generosity while he accepted the gratitude.

Daniel returned to the computer.

“I still need a payment method for the outstanding $14,280.”

Kevin quietly pulled Ashley aside.

Robert checked his wallet.

Linda looked at Eric.

Nobody looked at me anymore.

Eric finally followed me toward the elevators.

“Megan.”

I kept walking.

“Megan, stop.”

I turned.

His voice dropped.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“Everybody wants something.”

“Not from you.”

His face tightened.

“You’re going to destroy five years of marriage because my family made one stupid joke?”

I opened the folder.
