Part 2 of 3

“About Vanessa?”

“No.”

A pause.

“About Harold Pike.”

The name sounded familiar.

Harold had been Dad’s closest friend for decades.

He spent holidays with us.

He never forgot our birthdays.

Dad slowly sat back down.

“What happened?”

Michael answered carefully.

“Harold was found deceased in his home sometime during the night.”

The room became perfectly quiet.

Dad removed his glasses.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the untouched pancakes sitting in front of him.

Then he whispered,

“Vanessa called Natalie at five this morning to tell her I was the one who died.”

On the other end of the line, Michael didn’t say anything.

Neither did I.

Dad slowly looked toward the brown envelope resting on the kitchen table.

The updated will suddenly seemed far less important than it had an hour earlier.

Something much larger had begun, and for the first time that morning, I wasn’t sure our family was dealing with fraud anymore.

Harold’s Name Changed Everything

Dad hung up with Michael and remained seated for a long moment.

He kept turning his coffee mug slowly in his hands.

I hadn’t heard Harold Pike’s name in weeks, but growing up, he had practically been family. He came to every Thanksgiving dinner, every Fourth of July barbecue, and every birthday party I could remember. He and Dad had built a small construction company together before Harold retired years earlier.

None of this made sense.

“Why would Vanessa think you were the one who died?” I asked.

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached for his phone and dialed Vanessa.

She answered on the second ring.

“Dad…”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

“At home.”

“No.” His voice stayed calm. “Where were you at five this morning?”

She hesitated.

“Grant and I drove over after we got the phone call.”

“To my house?”

“Yes.”

“Using what key?”

Another silence.

Dad closed his eyes.

“I changed every lock three weeks ago.”

Grant suddenly took the phone.

“Richard, everybody’s emotional. Let’s not do this over the phone.”

Dad looked at me.

“Then come here.”

Grant didn’t answer.

Dad ended the call.

Neither of us believed they were coming.

The Security Camera Told a Different Story

By noon, Michael arrived carrying a slim black laptop.

Dad had already contacted the county sheriff, who asked us not to leave town until officers had spoken with everyone involved.

Michael opened the laptop on the kitchen island.

“Richard, before we talk about the will, I need you to see something.”

He pulled up footage from Dad’s front-door security camera.

The timestamp read 3:41 a.m.

Vanessa and Grant walked onto the porch carrying flashlights.

Grant tried one key after another.

None worked.

He looked irritated.

Vanessa pointed toward the garage.

The two disappeared from view.

A minute later they returned carrying a metal pry bar.

I felt sick.

Grant wedged it beneath the side entrance door.

The frame bent.

After nearly two minutes, they forced their way inside.

Dad never looked away from the screen.

He simply folded his hands.

The footage continued.

Twenty-six minutes later they came back outside carrying two cardboard file boxes.

Grant smiled.

Vanessa hugged them tightly against her chest as though she had found buried treasure.

Then they drove away.

Michael paused the video.

“The responding deputy has already seen this.”

Dad nodded once.

He didn’t look angry.

He looked disappointed.

Vanessa Finally Came Clean About One Thing

Just after three that afternoon, two detectives arrived with Vanessa.

She wasn’t handcuffed.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

Grant wasn’t with her.

One detective explained that Grant had asked for a lawyer before answering questions.

Vanessa refused to sit down.

She stood in the middle of Dad’s living room, twisting a tissue between her fingers.

Finally she looked at him.

“I never wanted this to happen.”

Dad didn’t react.

“Which part?”

She started crying harder.

“We were broke.”

No one interrupted.

“Grant lost almost everything.”

She covered her face.

“Credit cards… loans… online betting… it just kept getting worse.”

I had suspected money problems, but nothing like this.

Vanessa continued.

“He said if we found your will early, we’d know what we could count on.”

Dad quietly asked,

“So you broke into my house?”

She nodded.

“Grant found copies of your old estate papers.”

My father looked toward Michael.

The attorney gave a small nod.

Exactly as Dad had expected.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Grant thought everything was already ours anyway. He kept saying we’d only be getting it a little sooner.”

Dad leaned back in his chair.

“Did you know about the forged power of attorney?”

She hesitated too long.

Then she whispered,

“Yes.”

The room fell silent.

She looked at me instead of Dad.

“I told myself we’d put the money back once we sold the house.”

Before anyone could speak again, one of the detectives’ phones rang.

He answered, listened for less than a minute, then looked directly at his partner.

His expression changed.

He slowly turned toward my father.

“Mr. Bennett… we’ve just received the preliminary report on Harold Pike.”

Dad stood.

“What did they find?”

The detective took a slow breath.

“This wasn’t a natural death.”

The Truth About Harold Pike Was Worse Than Any of Us Imagined

The detective lowered his phone before speaking again.

“The medical examiner found evidence that Harold Pike was poisoned.”

The room went completely still.

Vanessa slowly lowered herself onto the couch as though her knees had given out.

Dad stared at the detective.

“Poisoned?”

The detective nodded.

“We’re treating his death as a homicide until proven otherwise.”

No one spoke.

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

“We also recovered several weeks of phone records.”

He placed a folder on the coffee table.

“Grant called Harold more than forty times during the last month.”
