Part 3 of 3

“Give me Rachel’s number.”

“She doesn’t want contact.”

He nodded immediately.

“That’s fair.”

There wasn’t even a hint of anger.

Only confusion.

He looked ten years older than he had the night before.

After several quiet minutes he stood.

“Let’s check something.”

He led me into his small home office.

His desktop computer sat exactly where it always had.

Family photos lined the shelves.

Mom smiled from nearly every frame.

Dad logged into every account he owned.

Dating profiles.

Email.

Cloud storage.

Phone backups.

Nothing unusual.

No fake accounts.

No hidden conversations.

No suspicious searches.

We even checked whether anyone had installed tracking software on his phone.

Nothing.

The more we searched, the less guilty he looked.

Then Dad remembered something.

“The security cameras.”

He had installed doorbell cameras after several package thefts the previous winter.

We opened the recordings.

Most showed nothing except delivery drivers and neighborhood dogs.

Then we reached the night of his dinner with Rachel.

11:42 p.m.

Dad’s car pulled into the driveway.

He walked toward the front porch.

Behind him, almost across the street, another figure stood beneath a maple tree.

The person wore a baseball cap and dark jacket.

They remained perfectly still until Dad entered the house.

Then they slowly turned and walked away.

Dad paused the video.

“Can we zoom in?”

The image became grainy.

The face remained hidden.

But the person’s shoes were surprisingly clear.

Brown leather ankle boots with a wide brass buckle wrapped around each ankle.

Something about them bothered me.

I’d seen those boots before.

I just couldn’t remember where.

The Boots I Had Seen Since Childhood

For the next two days I couldn’t stop thinking about those shoes.

I enlarged the image.

Printed screenshots.

Compared online brands.

Nothing.

Then Sunday arrived.

Every first Sunday of the month I visited my mother’s grave.

Dad came too.

We placed fresh white lilies into the vase exactly as we always had.

As we walked back toward the parking lot, another bouquet caught my eye.

Someone had already visited Mom earlier that morning.

The flowers were fresh.

Very fresh.

Dad noticed too.

“Probably your Aunt Sabrina.”

Of course.

Mom’s younger sister never missed a month.

We found her exactly where Dad expected.

She stood near her SUV speaking with another family from church.

When she turned around to hug me, my eyes dropped automatically.

Brown leather boots.

Wide brass buckles.

Exactly like the footage.

My heart skipped.

Maybe dozens of women owned similar boots.

That proved nothing.

Still…

I couldn’t stop staring.

Sabrina noticed.

“Sweetheart?”

“I like your boots.”

She smiled.

“I’ve had these forever.”

Forever.

The word echoed strangely in my head.

She had worn them every winter since I was in high school.

That afternoon I drove home and replayed the security footage again.

The gait matched surprisingly well.

The slight outward turn of the left foot.

The same height.

The same posture.

Still not enough.

I needed more than a pair of boots.

I started thinking backward.

Every woman Dad had dated.

Every place.

Every timeline.

One detail finally connected them all.

Sabrina always seemed to know when Dad had gone on a date.

She would casually call the next day.

“How did dinner go?”

Or she’d stop by with leftovers.

Or she’d mention she’d been “in the neighborhood.”

At the time it had felt caring.

Now it felt… different.

I opened social media and searched old photographs.

Years of family gatherings.

Christmas dinners.

Church picnics.

Birthday barbecues.

There they were.

The same boots.

Again.

And again.

And again.

I closed my laptop.

Without another word, I picked up my phone and called Rachel.

“I think I know who has been making everyone disappear.”
