Happy Soul Moral Stories

“OUR BABY IS GONE, EMILY. PLEASE STOP ASKING QUESTIONS!” My Husband Snapped Two Weeks After I Nearly Lost My Life Giving Birth. He’d Handled All the Hospital Arrangements, and I Had Trusted Him. Then I Found My 8-Year-Old Son Hiding His Birthday Money in a Glass Jar. When I Asked What He Was Saving For, He Whispered, “My Baby Sister.” I Held Him Close and Told Him We Couldn’t Bring Her Back. But He Looked Me Straight in the Eye and Asked, “THEN WHY DID DADDY GIVE THAT LADY MONEY?”

Part 2 of 3

“We’re telling you we have no verified evidence that she died here. We’re working urgently to locate her.”

I gripped the arms of my chair.

For fourteen days, I’d mourned a daughter whose death nobody could document.

I gave the detective the bank statements, the apartment address, and the information about Vanessa. She asked me not to confront anyone while they followed up.

That evening, Vanessa called on video. She asked whether I’d eaten and whether I needed company. I kept my voice calm.

“Are you at home?” I asked.

“No, I’m staying with a friend for a few days.”

Behind her, I saw pale yellow curtains and part of a white crib. Vanessa shifted the phone, but not before I noticed a small blue shape resting against the railing.

It was a stuffed puppy.

And on its collar was a tiny yellow star.

I’d sewn that star myself because Toby wanted his sister to have something nobody else owned.

Vanessa ended the call a moment later. I immediately contacted the detective and described what I’d seen.

Then I went into Toby’s bedroom.

His glass jar sat on the dresser, still half-filled with money. I picked it up and held it against my chest.

For the first time since the delivery, I allowed myself to believe my daughter might still be alive.

PART 2 — THE FAMILY MY HUSBAND TRIED TO STEAL

The Truth Behind the Flowers

The detective called the following morning. Officers had located Vanessa at the furnished apartment in Superior and found a newborn girl there. The baby was receiving medical care while investigators verified her identity.

“Is she all right?” I asked.

“She’s being examined, Mrs. Carter. We’ll update you as soon as we can.”

I sat down on the kitchen floor and cried. My sister, Diane, came over and helped me pack a bag. I took Toby to stay with her while Rachel worked on emergency custody protections.

Lucas left dozens of messages. Some begged me to come home. Others accused me of ruining his life.

One message made me listen twice.

“Emily, you don’t understand what I was trying to protect. Vanessa wasn’t supposed to keep her this long.”

I forwarded it to the detective.

Over the following days, investigators uncovered messages showing that Lucas and Vanessa had been having an affair for nearly two years. Lucas had rented the apartment and withdrawn money before my delivery. The envelope Toby saw contained cash intended to support Vanessa while she kept the baby hidden.

A hospital employee had improperly facilitated the baby’s removal under the appearance of a transfer and was now under investigation. Lucas had used my medical emergency to carry out a plan he’d made before our daughter was born.

The detective explained that the investigation was continuing and that not every detail could yet be disclosed. But one thing was clear: Lucas hadn’t made a desperate decision in the confusion of the delivery room.

He’d planned for another woman to take our child.

And then he’d sat beside my hospital bed and watched me grieve.

The Mother-in-Law Who Stayed Silent

Brenda called Diane’s house three days later.

“Emily, Lucas is falling apart. You need to stop treating him like a monster.”

“Did you know my daughter was alive?”

There was a long silence.

“I knew Lucas was seeing Vanessa,” she finally admitted. “I didn’t know exactly what he’d arranged until that night.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I was afraid he’d go to prison. He’s my son.”

I closed my eyes.

“Brenda, I spent two weeks crying in my bedroom. You brought me food. You watched Toby put money in a jar because he thought he could buy his sister back.”

Her voice became defensive.

“Lucas thought you might not survive. Vanessa wanted a baby more than anything. He was trying to make sure the little girl had a home.”

“She had a home. With me.”

“You already have Toby, Emily. Vanessa has nothing.”

I stared at the telephone.

“You think having one child means I should be grateful you let someone else take the other?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“It’s exactly what you said.”

Brenda began crying and insisting she’d been trapped between protecting her son and telling me the truth.

I didn’t comfort her.

“You made your choice, Brenda. You chose Lucas. Now I’m choosing my children.”

I told her she would have no contact with Toby or the baby while the investigation continued and the court considered appropriate safeguards.

For the first time in eleven years, I ended a conversation with my mother-in-law without apologizing.

The Friend Who Watched Me Cry

Vanessa’s attorney later contacted Rachel about a request to convey an apology. I agreed to receive a written statement, but I refused a private meeting. I wanted answers, not another opportunity for Vanessa to tell me what I should feel.

Her statement began by saying Lucas had told her I might not survive the delivery. She claimed she’d believed she could provide a stable home for the baby.

Then she wrote that she hadn’t known how to return my daughter once I recovered.

I read that sentence several times.

Vanessa had visited me after I came home. She’d carried flowers into my bedroom, hugged me while I cried, and told me she wished she could ease my pain.

She’d known my daughter was alive.

I wrote a response through Rachel.

“You sat beside my bed and watched me mourn a baby you were hiding. You knew I was alive. You knew I wanted my daughter. Every day you stayed silent was another choice you made.”

Rachel reviewed the message before sending it through counsel. I didn’t ask for a reply.

I had once considered Vanessa one of my closest friends. Now I understood that her kindness had been another way of keeping me from looking too closely.

The Husband Who Couldn’t Explain

Lucas requested a meeting through our attorneys. Rachel arranged a brief conversation in her office, with both lawyers present.

He looked exhausted when he walked in. His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red. For a moment, I remembered the man who’d held Toby on his shoulders at the county fair and stayed awake beside me when I had the flu.

Then I remembered him telling me our daughter was dead.

“Emily, I never meant for any of this to happen,” he began.

“You rented an apartment before I went into labor.”

He looked down.

“Vanessa was desperate. She’d been through so much trying to have a child.”
