Part 2 of 3

I watched from the living-room window as he climbed out, followed by Madison.

He knocked.

“Mom! Open the door!”

I stayed where I was.

He knocked again.

“We know you’re home!”

Madison stepped onto the porch.

“Helen, this is ridiculous! We need to talk!”

I picked up my phone and sent Daniel a message.

I’m not discussing money while you’re shouting outside my house. We can arrange a time to talk calmly.

He read it.

Then he looked through the front window.

For a moment, I thought he might continue knocking.

Instead, he said something to Madison.

She threw up her hands.

They returned to the SUV and drove away.

I sat down, trembling slightly.

I’d spent years opening that door whenever my son needed something.

This was the first time I’d allowed myself not to.

The following morning, I called my attorney.

I wanted to review my estate plan.

And I wanted to know exactly what Daniel had been asking other people about my money.

PART 2 — THE MONEY WAS NEVER HIS

The Lawyer’s Second Question

Victor Hail had handled our estate documents after Charles passed away.

He was a careful man with silver hair and a habit of straightening every paper before reading it.

I placed my blue binder on his desk.

“Victor, I want to update my will and establish a trust. I also need to know whether anyone has asked your office about managing my affairs.”

He looked at me thoughtfully.

“Has something happened?”

I explained the dinner, the email, and the attempted withdrawal.

Victor listened without interrupting.

“First, Helen, nobody can simply take control of your property because you’re seventy-three. You remain entitled to manage your own affairs.”

“I understand. But I’m worried Daniel is making plans without telling me.”

Victor opened a file.

“Actually, there’s something I should mention.”

I felt my hands tighten around the binder.

“Two months ago, Daniel contacted my office asking about power-of-attorney arrangements.”

I stared at him.

“For me?”

“Yes. He asked what would be required for someone to manage your finances if you became unable to do so.”

“Did you prepare anything?”

“No. Nothing was signed, and no authority was granted.”

I looked toward the window.

Daniel had been asking about joint access to my investments.

He’d also asked my attorney about managing my finances.

And now there was a flagged withdrawal attempt.

I still didn’t know who’d submitted it.

But I knew enough to stop pretending these questions were harmless.

“I want everything reviewed,” I said.

Victor nodded.

“We’ll make sure your documents reflect your wishes.”

We spent the next two hours discussing my estate.

My existing will named Daniel as a beneficiary. I wanted to change that arrangement and create a professionally managed trust for Lily.

I also asked Victor to explain how my younger grandson might be affected. I loved both children, and I didn’t want a decision made in anger to create problems I hadn’t considered.

He walked me through the options and their consequences.

By the end of the appointment, we’d completed the documents I was ready to sign and established a plan for reviewing the remaining assets.

I left exhausted.

But for the first time in years, I felt as though I was making decisions about my own future.

“We Can’t Live Like This!”

Daniel’s SUV was parked in my driveway when I returned home.

He and Madison stood on the porch.

I considered driving away, but I was tired of avoiding the conversation.

I unlocked the door.

“You can come inside. But if either of you starts shouting, the conversation ends.”

Daniel followed me into the living room.

Madison remained standing.

“Mom, what were you thinking?” Daniel demanded. “The mortgage payment didn’t go through. The school called about tuition, and now our cards are useless!”

I placed my purse on the table.

“Sit down, Daniel.”

“How am I supposed to sit down when you’re wrecking our finances?”

I looked at him.

“Your finances?”

He stopped.

“I’ve been paying those bills for years. When exactly were you planning to take responsibility for them?”

Madison crossed her arms.

“You always said you wanted to help your grandchildren.”

“I do want to help them. But paying for your spa visits and household upgrades isn’t the same thing.”

She looked offended.

“That’s unfair.”

“Then tell me what your plan is. How will you cover the mortgage next month?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I need time.”

“How much time?”

He didn’t answer.

I opened my blue binder and took out the printed email.

“Daniel, why did you ask about gaining joint access to my investments?”

He stared at the paper.

“I was just exploring options.”

“Options for what?”

“For helping you manage things as you get older.”

I nodded slowly.

“Then why didn’t you ask me whether I needed help?”

Madison stepped forward.

“Helen, he’s your son. Of course he’s concerned.”

I kept my eyes on Daniel.

“And why did you contact Victor about power of attorney?”

His face changed.

“Victor told you?”

“Yes.”

“I was thinking ahead.”

“Without talking to me.”

He looked away.

I took out the bank’s security report.

“At 5:42 yesterday morning, someone attempted to withdraw money from my investment account. The bank stopped it.”

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

“Did you know anything about that?”

“No! Mom, I wouldn’t steal from you.”

I wanted to believe him.

But he had already hidden two inquiries about my finances.

“Then help me understand why you were asking about access to money that isn’t yours.”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

Madison shook her head.

“This is getting ridiculous. We’re talking about family money.”

I turned toward her.

“No, Madison. We’re talking about my retirement savings.”

She looked away.

What Lily Overheard

The front door opened.

Lily entered with her backpack over one shoulder.

Madison spun around.

“I told you to wait in the car!”

Lily stopped.

“I wanted to see Grandma.”

I smiled gently.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

She crossed the room and hugged me.

Then she looked toward her father.

“Grandma, can I tell you something?”

Daniel stiffened.

“Lily, this isn’t the time.”

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

“It’s all right. What is it?”

She hesitated.

“I heard Dad talking to Mom last week.”

Madison’s face tightened.

“Lily.”

My granddaughter swallowed.

“He said if Grandma kept refusing to help, maybe there was a way to get control of her accounts. And then he said selling her house would solve a lot of problems.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you say that?”

He stared at the floor.

“I was frustrated.”

“Did you say it?”

He nodded.

“Yes. But I didn’t mean it the way she heard it.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“You said it would be easier once Grandma couldn’t stop you.”

Madison stepped toward her.

“You misunderstood an adult conversation.”

I raised my hand.

“That’s enough.”

Everyone looked at me.

I turned to Lily.

“Thank you for telling me. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

She nodded, looking relieved and frightened at the same time.

I asked whether she wanted some water, then told her she could wait in the kitchen while the adults finished talking.

When she’d gone, I faced my son.

“Daniel, I’m seventy-three. I drive, manage my bills, make my own appointments, and live independently. You don’t get to plan the sale of my house as though I’m no longer here.”

He rubbed his face.
