Part 2 of 3

He ignored me.

“These are confidential documents. You could be in serious trouble.”

“Your son took them out of my handbag after I told him not to.”

Brandon rolled his eyes.

“Oh, quit making such a fuss. It was a joke.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Listen carefully, Victoria. You’re going to explain how you obtained these papers, and you’re going to sign a confidentiality agreement before leaving this hotel.”

“No, Richard. I’m not.”

His expression hardened.

“Careers can end very quickly when people challenge influential executives.”

I remembered the employee complaints Daniel had described.

“Is that what you tell people who question your decisions?”

“I tell them to understand their place.”

Before I could answer, his phone vibrated.

He read the notification. Then he read it again.

His expression changed.

“What is this?”

Brandon leaned closer.

“Dad?”

Richard turned the screen away.

It was the formal notice restricting his corporate approval privileges pending investigation.

He looked at me.

“How did you know this was coming?”

“Because I was informed before it was sent.”

Richard stared at my portfolio, then back at me.

“Victoria… who exactly do you work for?”

PART 2 — THE NAME BEHIND THE COMPANY

The Question Richard Should Have Asked Earlier

“I’ve asked you a question, Victoria.”

Richard was still holding my portfolio. Around us, guests had begun watching the confrontation, and the string quartet had stopped playing.

“And I’ve asked you repeatedly to return my documents.”

“These belong to Whitmore Global.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain why you have them.”

“Because I’m authorized to possess them.”

He laughed.

“Authorized by whom?”

“The company.”

“I’m a senior executive there. I’ve never heard of you.”

“You’ve heard of Hayes Capital Holdings, haven’t you?”

Richard frowned.

“Of course. It’s our controlling shareholder.”

“Then perhaps you should have asked who owns Hayes Capital.”

Before he could respond, Emily approached with my mother.

“What’s happening?” Emily asked.

Brandon immediately pointed at me.

“Your sister has confidential company records. Dad’s trying to figure out where she stole them.”

“Careful, Brandon,” I said. “That’s a serious accusation.”

Emily looked frightened.

“Vicky, please tell me there’s an explanation.”

“There is. Brandon searched my handbag without permission, and his father is refusing to return what he took.”

“I was joking!” Brandon snapped.

“I told you to stop.”

Richard interrupted.

“I’m not handing over company property until I know how she obtained it.”

My mother touched my arm.

“Victoria, couldn’t you just explain? Everyone’s watching.”

I looked at her.

“Mom, everyone was watching when Richard humiliated me onstage, too.”

She lowered her eyes.

My phone vibrated. Daniel and our chief compliance officer, Margaret Ellis, had arrived downstairs.

I sent them the ballroom number.

Richard noticed.

“Calling someone to rescue you?”

“No. Someone who can answer your questions.”

He smiled unpleasantly.

“I hope you understand how badly this could end for you.”

“Richard, I think you’re the one who should be concerned about that.”

The Man Who Walked Past Him

A few minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

Daniel entered with Margaret, carrying a blue folder. Richard immediately waved him over.

“Daniel! Thank goodness. We have a serious problem.”

Daniel approached.

“Good evening, Mr. Whitmore.”

Richard held up my portfolio.

“This woman has confidential corporate records. I need you to explain how she got them.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“Ms. Hayes, are you all right?”

“I’m fine. I’d appreciate having my portfolio returned.”

Richard blinked.

“Ms. Hayes?”

Daniel faced him.

“Mr. Whitmore, please return those documents.”

“They’re company property!”

“Ms. Hayes is authorized to possess them.”

“On whose authority?”

Daniel opened his folder.

“Victoria Hayes is the sole beneficial owner of Hayes Capital Holdings, which controls Whitmore Global.”

Richard stared at him.

“What?”

“Ms. Hayes owns the company.”

Patricia gave an incredulous laugh.

“That’s impossible.”

Margaret answered.

“It’s correct, Mrs. Whitmore.”

Richard looked at me.

“You’re telling me you’ve owned Whitmore Global this entire time?”

“For seven years.”

Brandon shook his head.

“Then why are you driving an old Honda?”

“Because I like my car.”

“And wearing that dress?”

“Because I like my dress.”

Patricia looked genuinely confused.

“But you told us you were a consultant.”

“I told you I worked in finance. You decided the rest.”

Richard slowly put the portfolio down.

I picked it up and returned it to my handbag.

Emily hadn’t spoken. She stood beside my mother, staring at me.

“Vicky… why didn’t you tell me?”

“I wanted our relationship to be about us, Emily. Not my bank account.”

She looked toward the white envelope on the stage.

“And you let them offer you that job?”

“I tried to decline without upsetting your party.”

Her eyes filled.

“I should’ve said something.”

I didn’t disagree.

Richard cleared his throat.

“Well, Victoria, this is certainly an unexpected development. If you’d told us who you were, we could’ve avoided this misunderstanding.”

“Which part?”

“The job offer. I thought you needed assistance.”

“And that made it acceptable to humiliate me publicly?”

He looked away.

“I was trying to be generous.”

“Then why did you need a microphone?”

Patricia stepped forward.

“Victoria, darling, Richard sometimes has an unfortunate sense of humor. Surely we can move past this. We’re practically family.”

I looked at her.

“You didn’t seem particularly interested in including me in the family photographs.”

Her smile vanished.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Mr. Whitmore, we also need to address the notification you received tonight.”

Richard’s expression changed immediately.

The Investigation

“This is a private family event,” Richard said. “We can discuss company business on Monday.”

“The access restrictions are already effective,” Daniel replied. “You’ll receive further instructions concerning the independent investigation.”

Richard glanced at the guests watching us.

“An investigation into what, exactly?”

“Vendor agreements and payments approved through your division. Several transactions involving businesses connected to your brother require examination.”

“Those were legitimate vendors!”

“You’ll have an opportunity to provide supporting documentation.”

“I’ve given eleven years to that company.”

I looked at him.

“And the company has paid you for eleven years of work. That doesn’t place you above its procedures.”

Richard’s face reddened.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“No. I’d much rather be celebrating my sister’s engagement.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“The review also includes complaints from employees who questioned those invoices. Two subsequently lost their positions, and another resigned.”

Richard waved dismissively.

“Those people were incompetent. They couldn’t follow instructions.”

“That’s precisely why the circumstances need independent review,” Margaret said.
