Part 2 of 3

“Why didn’t Grandma tell me?”

Naomi passed me the handwritten letter.

Evelyn had written it shortly before her death.

My darling Clare, never mistake someone’s confidence for their right to control you. A person can live in a beautiful house for years and still forget the kindness that allowed them through the door.

I stopped reading and pressed the letter against my chest.

My grandmother had never liked Victoria. She hadn’t explained why, and I hadn’t pushed her.

Now I understood.

Naomi waited until I was ready.

“I need your authorization to notify the Ashford attorneys that the trust is reviewing the occupancy agreement. We’ll also ask the court to protect your belongings and address the financial transfers.”

I looked toward the hospital window.

A few hours earlier, Victoria had stood above me as though she could decide where I lived, what money I had, and whether I would keep my child.

“Do it,” I said. “But make sure the staff aren’t caught in the middle. None of this is their fault.”

Naomi nodded.

“Understood.”

Then my phone rang.

Bradley.

I answered with Naomi beside me.

He didn’t ask about our daughter.

“Clare, what have you done?”

“I’m in the hospital, Bradley.”

“My mother’s attorney says you’re claiming ownership of the estate.”

“The trust owns it. Your mother signed the agreement.”

A pause followed.

Then I heard Victoria in the background.

“Tell her to withdraw that notice immediately.”

I closed my eyes.

“Bradley, did you know your mother planned to serve me divorce papers at the shower?”

“I knew she was going to speak to you.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He exhaled.

“Yes. I knew.”

The admission hurt more than I expected.

“And you knew she was going to threaten me over our daughter?”

“Mom was trying to make sure things didn’t get out of hand.”

“I was having contractions on the ballroom floor.”

He said nothing.

“You stood there and watched.”

His voice dropped.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

I looked at the cream envelope lying beside my bed.

“You knew how to sign the papers.”

I ended the call.

For the first time since the baby shower, I wasn’t wondering how to make Bradley understand what he had done.

I was wondering why I had spent so long explaining it to myself.

PART 2 — THE HOUSE SHE THOUGHT WAS HERS

The Video Victoria Forgot About

By the following morning, Bradley’s attorney had filed an emergency request raising concerns about my emotional stability and asking the court to consider restrictions after our daughter’s birth.

Attached were statements from Victoria and two women who had attended the shower.

One claimed I had become hysterical before collapsing. Another described me as threatening and irrational.

Tessa read the statements while I sat propped against my pillows.

“She says you deliberately smashed that champagne glass.”

“I could barely stand.”

“And this one says you threatened to destroy the family.”

I shook my head.

“I asked where my husband was.”

Naomi arrived shortly afterward. She had already spoken with the country club’s management company.

“There’s something I want you to see,” she said.

She placed a tablet on the bed.

The ballroom’s security system had recorded the baby shower. Because the cameras were installed under the property’s security contract, the footage had been preserved by the trust’s property manager after Naomi requested it.

The recording began with Victoria tapping her champagne glass.

I watched myself walk toward her, one hand resting on my stomach. I watched her hand me the envelope, and I heard her say I had never belonged in the family.

Then came the custody threat.

My stomach tightened as the recording continued.

There was Bradley, standing behind the column. When I called his name, he looked directly at me.

He had been close enough to hear everything.

When I stumbled against the dessert table, he started forward. Victoria glanced at him, and he stopped.

Tessa covered her mouth.

“He actually stopped because she looked at him.”

I couldn’t answer.

The camera captured Victoria leaning over me as I lay on the floor. Her words were quiet but audible.

“By the time you leave the hospital, you will have nothing.”

Naomi paused the recording.

“This doesn’t automatically decide a custody case,” she explained. “But it directly contradicts the statements they filed. It also documents the threats and the circumstances of your medical emergency.”

I stared at the frozen image.

Victoria’s face was inches from mine.

“Send it to the court,” I said.

“I will.”

“And keep the original safe.”

Naomi closed the tablet.

“Already done.”

That afternoon, she obtained temporary financial orders addressing the transferred funds and preventing either spouse from disposing of additional marital assets outside ordinary expenses.

The court also declined to grant Bradley’s emergency custody request on the evidence he had presented. Naomi made clear that any parenting arrangements would be addressed through the proper process after the baby was born.

Victoria’s statements had not given her the control she expected.

And the deed was about to become an even bigger problem for her.

“You Knew This Whole Time?”

Three days after the shower, Bradley asked to visit me at the hospital.

I agreed to a short conversation with Naomi present by phone. Tessa remained nearby, and Bradley arrived without his mother.

He carried a bouquet of white roses.

“I thought these might cheer you up.”

I looked at the flowers.

“You can leave them with the nurses.”

He set them on the windowsill instead and sat down.

Without his mother directing the conversation, he seemed unsure where to begin.

“How’s the baby?”

“She’s doing well. The doctors want me to rest.”

“That’s good.”

A long silence followed.

Then he leaned forward.

“Clare, this whole property situation has gotten out of control.”

I stared at him.

“That’s why you came?”

“No. I came because I wanted to see you. But my mother’s lawyer says the trust is threatening to terminate her right to live there.”

“Naomi is reviewing the agreement because your mother ordered people to remove my belongings and claimed the property belonged to her.”

“She’s lived there for decades.”

“That doesn’t make it hers.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t know about the deed.”

“Your mother did.”

“She says your grandmother never intended to take the place away from us.”

“My grandmother didn’t take anything away. She bought the property and let your family stay.”

Bradley looked toward the window.

“Mom says this is personal.”

I almost laughed.

“She served me divorce papers at my baby shower, Bradley. How much more personal could she make it?”

His face tightened.

“I know the timing was terrible.”

“The timing?”

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

I waited.

He looked down at his wedding ring.

“There’s someone else.”

I had suspected it from the moment Victoria announced that he had found someone suitable. Still, hearing him admit it made my throat tighten.
